The ICEWR 2026 Technical Visit to Putrajaya Wetlands will take place on 8 October 2026.

Putrajaya Wetlands is the first man-made wetlands in Malaysia and the largest constructed freshwater wetlands in the tropics. Designed as a natural water treatment and flood attenuation system, the wetlands improve water quality through physical, chemical, and biological processes before water enters the lake, while also enhancing biodiversity and providing valuable ecosystem services. Recognised as a UNESCO Ecohydrology Demonstration Site in 2010 under the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP), Putrajaya Wetlands exemplifies the practical application of ecohydrology principles by integrating ecological processes with sustainable water resources management.

As part of ICEWR 2026, the technical visit will provide participants with firsthand insights into the planning, design, operation, and management of this internationally recognized ecohydrological system, showcasing its role in sustainable urban water management, ecosystem conservation, and climate adaptation.

5 Reasons You Should Join ICEWR 2026 Technical Visit

1. Witness how the largest constructed freshwater wetland in the tropics was engineered to function as a natural, self-sustaining ecosystem that supports surrounding urban infrastructure
2. Study the mechanics of the wetlands' multi-cell filtration system and learn first-hand how it naturally treats surface runoff and stabilises water quality
3. Observe how constructed wetlands act as crucial buffer zones, absorbing excess rainwater and mitigating urban flood risks
4. See how urban development can successfully coexist with habitat creation and understand the strategies used to attract and sustain local and migratory birds, along with diverse aquatic life
5. Observe the management and operational models that keep the wetlands thriving by exploring the potential for public-private partnerships in eco-tourism
